How To Have Dewy Skin In Dry Weather

All of you who follow along on my Instagram know that my wife and I have been staying in Lake Tahoe for the last few months. While Tahoe is one of my favorite places in the world, and truly feels like home (I grew up about 40 minutes away), the biggest downfall is how freaking dry the air is thanks to the high elevation.

My fellow mountain girlies know that living at elevation comes with the cost of super dry air, which makes fine lines and wrinkles more prominent. Because your skin gets all the moisture sucked right out of it…kinda like a prune.

So, the question is, how to maintain some semblance of dewy, delicious skin even when you’re living in a place with dry weather? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered.

Today’s post will share a round up of my top 8 tips on how to get moisture back into your skin even in the driest climates. These tips are tried and true!

How To Have Dewy Skin In Dry Weather

  • Hydrate
  • Use a facial steamer
  • Supplements & nutrition
  • Don’t forget to exfoliate
  • Use powerful serum
  • High quality moisturizer
  • Don’t forget sunscreen
  • Wide brim visor

We all know that dewy skin is the goal, but it’s not always easy to achieve. Take it from me, my skin runs dry and I love staying in high elevation, dry weather climates. Not the best combo, right?

Well, after years of dealing with everything from hyperpigmentation, to hypopigmentation, early aging, and collagen loss- I’ve finally cracked down on my skincare in a way that helps me feel glowy and plump all the time.

Hydrate

The most obvious first tip to battle dry, brittle skin is to hydrate. I mean, duh. If something is dry, get it wet, right?

The thing with hydration is that you might drink enough water, but the quality of the water you’re drinking might be stripped of nutrients. This is why I’m a big advocate of adding electrolytes to my water to get the most nourishment possible while I’m hydrating.

Use A Facial Steamer

We went to Peru for all of last winter, and stayed at 11,000 ft elevation. My wife made fun of me for packing my steamer. But then proceeded to use it every day with me, because it was like magic on our dry skin.

Facial steamers are super affordable, and don’t take up a ton of space or weight when you travel. But, if you don’t want to deal with lugging one around, you can always make your own steamer with boiling water over the stove.

Supplements & Nutrition

The trick to healthy skin on the outside, is a happy body on the inside. Trust me, this was a huge part of my skin healing process. Try to eat lovingly with whole quality foods as much as  you can (without getting obsessive about it, of course). Foods like leafy greens, hydrating fruits, fish, avocado, and sweet potatoes are especially great for the skin.

To help fill in any nutritional gaps, you can always supplement to give your skin a little boost. I do this by taking fish oil, mostly because I’m not a big fish eater. I also do this with organ supplements, which have been an absolute game changer for my hair, skin, and nails.

Don’t Forget To Exfoliate

Sometimes when your skin is dry, you don’t want to exfoliate. Because it sounds like it will dry you out more. Or at least that’s what I thought. Boy, was I wrong.

I’ve been using the Barefaced Toning Pads (Kayla10 saves you a little extra btw!!) for a few months, and have noticed a huge change in my skin while living in dry weather. I love these pads because they’re super affordable, and I can use them daily without irritation. This says a lot for someone with sensitive skin.

Although Barefaced doesn’t sell on Amazon, you can find Elemis Toning Pads on Amazon for a similar price, and competitive quality.

Use Powerful Serum

After moving to the mountains, I had to switch up my serum game. While the previous Vitamin C serum I used was wonderful in a more tropical climate, I found that I needed *more* while living in dry weather.

I went to a dermatologist in Tahoe, and she recommended the Zo Growth Serum, which I am now happily addicted to. I’ve been using it for a few months, and still love the way it feels every time I put it on.

High Quality Moisturizer

Of course if you’re living in a dry climate, then you’ll need a high quality moisturizer. This is a given. You know I’ve been a fan of Sente Dermal Repair for a few years now, and I find that this moisturizer still does the trick in any climate.

For my natural girlies out there, tallow is a great moisturizer for the skin and body which helps to plump skin and minimize wrinkles. I love this brand, because it comes with a variety of scents.

Don’t Forget Sunscreen

Even if it’s cold, even if it’s cloudy, even if you think the sun isn’t that strong…always wear your freaking sunscreen, okay?! I’m telling you, sun damage is one of the fastest ways to break down the skin, and this can show up as moisturize loss, as well.

My favorite thing to do is apply EltaMD with a dash of the Sente Dermal Repair first thing in the morning along with a short facial massage. It feels so good, and it’s the perfect way to incorporate 30 seconds of self care, while also being practical with your time.

Wide Brim Visor

I might be buried in my wide brim visor, and I don’t care. Sure, it might make me look a little extra, but my skin is happy for it.

Don’t get me wrong, getting sunshine is good for you, and it feels good too. But protecting yourself from too much sun is also vital in maintaining the health and youthfulness to your skin. I love this Eric Javits visor, because it comes with UV protection. But there are plenty of other options for all budgets.

Better yet, you can always find it on Poshmark for a better deal if you take a little longer to hunt.
